The police department administration office is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM.  Outside of those hours a call box is located to the right of the public entrance.  This dials directly to 911, where an officer is notified that you need assistance.

   Now Hiring for Butler Township Patrolman

The Butler Township Civil Service Commission will be receiving applications for examination for the position of Butler Township Patrolman.  Completed applications shall be filed with the Butler Township Manager, 290 South Duffy Road, Butler, PA  16001, no later than 4:30 p.m. on April 17th, 2024. 

Qualified applicants must have reached their 21st birthday by April 17th, 2024, and must reside within twenty (20) miles of the Butler Township Police Station within twelve (12) months of completing their probationary period.

Every applicant for the position of patrolman shall possess a high school diploma or GED plus an Associate Degree or 60 semester credit hours from an accredited institution of higher learning at time of application.  A total of 30 hours will be waived if the applicant possesses at least 2 years active military service with an honorable discharge.  The Associate Degree or 60 semester credit hours requirement will be waived if the applicant has been employed full-time for at least 3 years as a Law Enforcement Officer.  In addition, every applicant must be a United States citizen, be physically and mentally fit to perform all of the essential duties of a police officer, with or without reasonable accommodation, and, prior to appointment, possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

All applicants shall have successfully completed Act 120 training prior to taking the oral portion of the exam and shall be eligible to receive Act 120 Certification from the Municipal Police Officer’s Education and Training Commission following appointment.

The first portion of the examination, the physical agility test, will be held at the Allegheny County Police Academy, April 30, 2024, at 9:00 a.m.  Qualified applicants will receive written confirmation of authorization to attend this test.

The second portion of the examination, the written test will be held at the Allegheny County Police Academy, 700 West Ridge Drive, North Park. Allison Park, PA 15101-1799, April 30, 2024, immediately following the physical agility test.  Qualified applicants will receive verbal confirmation of authorization to attend this test.

Oral examinations will be held at the Butler Township Municipal Building, 290 South Duffy Road, Butler, PA 16001 for those applicants who have successfully passed the written examination.

Butler Township Police Officer Qualifications

  • Possess a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • Associates degree or 60 semester credit hours from an accredited institution of higher learning at time of application or 30 semester credit hours and at least 2 years active military service with honorable discharge or employed full-time for at least 3 years as a law enforcement officer.
  • The Associates Degree or 60 semester credit hours requirement will be waived if the applicant has been employed full time at least 3 years as a law enforcement officer
  • 21 years of age by (date of last day of applications being accepted)
  • Citizen of the United States of America
  • Successfully completed Act 120 training prior to the oral examination and eligible to receive Act 120 Certification from Municipal Police Officer’s Education and Training Commission (MPOETC) when appointed to the police officer position.
  • Possess a valid Driver’s License issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
